Group Home (Gruppbostad)

LSS — Act Concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments (1993:387)

What does it mean?

A group home (gruppbostad) is housing for persons with extensive disabilities, usually intellectual disabilities or autism, under LSS (the Act Concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments). The housing consists of a small number of apartments (usually 3–6) clustered around shared spaces, with round-the-clock staff.

Each resident has their own complete apartment with their own lease, kitchen, and bathroom. Shared spaces like living rooms and kitchens complement the private apartments and are used for communal activities and meals. The municipality is the principal and allocation is through a needs assessment decision. The group home shall provide the opportunity for as normal a life as possible with individuality, integrity, and self-determination as fundamental principles.

Key Points

  • Housing under LSS for persons with extensive disabilities
  • Individual apartments (usually 3–6) around shared spaces
  • Round-the-clock staff — own lease per resident
  • Municipality is the principal — allocation through needs assessment
  • Core principles: normality, individuality, integrity, and self-determination

Practical Tip

Application for a group home is made through the municipality's LSS administrator. The process can take time — start early, preferably several years before the need arises. You have the right to appeal rejections to the administrative court.
